CH 8
Fei Cheng entered the password to open the door, and as soon as he entered, he saw Ruan Xin putting on his shoes in the foyer.
“Chengcheng is back.” Ruan Xin said with a smile.
“How many times have I told you, don’t call me Chengcheng. It makes me sound like a little kid.” Fei Cheng stood against the wall. “It’s late and my brother is still squeezing you for labor? If it were me, I would have thrown a letter of resignation in his face.”
Ruan Xin’s charming smile was tinged with a trace of imperceptible embarrassment. He lowered his head to hide it and said, “As long as the salary is generous enough, I have no complaints about working overtime every day.”
Fei Cheng said, “Are you very short of money?”
“No, but I don’t need too much either.” Ruan Xin smiled and said, “By the way, how did you feel on your first day at work?”
Fei Cheng shrugged and sighed, “Just like that. I’m the Monkey King, my brother is Buddha. I’m a little monster, my brother is Ultraman. I can’t do anything about it, so I have to swallow my anger.”
“You say it as if you are living in deep water,” Ruan Xin said with a smile, “I know better than anyone how much you are loved by Mr. Fei, so don’t sell yourself short.”
Fei Cheng suddenly lowered his voice, “Assistant Ruan, let me ask you something.”
Ruan Xin nodded, “What is it?”
“You are with my brother almost 24 hours a day, you know this matter best.” Fei Cheng’s voice lowered further, “Has my brother been in love in the past few years?”
Ruan Xin’s expression had a moment of panic, but it was so brief that Fei Cheng didn’t catch it.
“I’m only responsible for the work side. I rarely interfere with Mr. Fei’s private life, so I’m not too sure.” Ruan Xin looked at him, “Why are you curious about this?”
Fei Cheng looked unconvinced, but did not ask, he just came close to Ruan Xin and whispered, “I think my brother is so perverse because he has no sex life. I seriously doubt he is still a virgin.”
Ruan Xin laughed awkwardly, “You can ask him directly.”
“Forget it,” Fei Cheng said. “I’m afraid he’ll kill me.”
Ruan Xin smiled and said, “Okay, I have to go now. You should get some rest.”
“Mn,” Fei Cheng waved his hand. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Fei Zheng’s room was across from the study, the door was closed and the light was leaking below the door.
Fei Cheng directly pushed the door open, and heard his brother throw over two cold words. “Knock first.”
Fei Cheng called him a mom in his head, then obediently knocked twice, walked in and sat down on the desk with a big smile.
His brother, Fei Zheng, was dressed in home clothes and wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses; a gentlemanly villain.
Fei Cheng glanced at the computer screen and said, “Brother, I’m hungry.”
Fei Zheng ignored him, and focused on the computer.
Fei Cheng said with a shy face, “Cook me a bowl of noodles.”
Fei Zheng’s gaze was filtered through the lenses. “Do I look like I know how to cook noodles?”
Fei Cheng looked at him seriously for a moment and shook his head. “No.”
Fei Zheng looked back at his computer. “Go to the fridge and see if there is anything to eat. If not, order takeout.”
Fei Cheng sighed. “You make me come back here to live, but do not give me food, you–“
A look from Fei Zheng made Fei Cheng swallow the rest of his complaint whole.
Fei Cheng got down from his desk, “I’ll cook it myself, okay? Do you want to eat? I can cook some more.”
Fei Zheng said without expression, “Yes.”
“I thought you didn’t eat anything.” Fei Cheng chattered as he walked out. “I can see you got me back to enslave me, oppress me, exploit me–“
Fei Zheng said, “Shut up.”
Fei Cheng, “..Oh.”
Fei Cheng skipped to the kitchen, opened the refrigerator, and was shocked. The refrigerator was empty, nothing but air. He opened the cupboards one by one and, again, found nothing to eat, not even a packet of salt.
Fei Cheng was speechless. Fei Zheng was playing a trick on him, right?
Fei Cheng had no choice but to go downstairs and buy two packs of instant noodles from the supermarket in his neighborhood and cook them.
When he was a student in the United States, he lived alone. He couldn’t cook complicated dishes, but making instant noodles was not difficult for him, and much better than Fei Zheng, a loser who could not even boil water.
After the noodles were cooked and served on the table, Fei Cheng went to the study to call out, “Boss, it’s time to eat.”
The two of them sat face to face and ate the noodles.
Fei Cheng asked with an expectant face. “How does it taste?”
Fei Zheng said indifferently, “Does it matter to you how it tastes?”
Fei Cheng gritted his teeth. “Are you going to lose a piece of meat or something if you say something nice?”
Fei Zheng said, “Shut up and eat yours.”
Fei Cheng grunted, ate two bites, and remembered something. “Brother, since I’m the talent director of Ming Xi, are all the artists and agents under my control?”
Fei Zheng’s face was expressionless. “Tell me what you have to say.”
Fei Cheng said, “There’s an agent I don’t like and I want to fire him, is that okay?”
Fei Zheng said, “Whatever.”
He answered so bluntly that Fei Cheng was stunned and said, “You won’t even ask me why?”
Fei Zheng did not raise his eyes. “You can make up your own mind about what’s within your authority. You don’t have to ask me.”
Fei Cheng nodded, “Oh.”
Fei Zheng put down his chopsticks and stood up. “Finish eating. and clean up.”
Fei Cheng was not happy. “Hey! You’re too much! To eat and just go back to work!”
Fei Zheng was deaf.
Fei Cheng was outraged. “Don’t expect me to cook for you again!”
Fei Zheng slightly hooked the corner of his mouth and pushed open the door into the study.
After washing the dishes with a lot of anger, Fei Cheng went to the indoor swimming pool. The pool was small, less than a hundred square feet, but it was big enough to hold him.
Using the remote control to close the curtains, Fei Cheng stripped naked, and went down to the pool. The human body was completely wet a few seconds later and with a stomp on the side of the pool wall, he swam out a long way.
The next second, the person disappeared, and was replaced by a snow-white dragon. His body was almost as long as the pool, and on his back were snow-white wings that spread on the surface of the water. The dragon’s tail swung, stirring up a large water splash.
Nan HuaiLin woke up in a daze.
His throat was dry and swollen. His head hurt so much that it almost exploded, and when he raised his hand to feel his forehead, it was as hot as fire. The fever had clearly gone down after yesterday’s infusion, but how come it had gotten worse again after a nap?
It was really strange.
When he sat up, he suddenly felt a strong dizziness that took a while to subside. He struggled to get out of bed, but his legs were so weak that he could barely stand.
Even in such a bad state, he still had to go to work.
Technically speaking, it was only his second day on the job, and he couldn’t take time off.
Just hang in there and get over it.
He had a sore throat and couldn’t eat anything, so he made a cup of soy milk and mixed it with a packet of instant coffee. He stirred it up and left it there, so when he finished washing up, the soy milk mixed with the coffee was just the right temperature. He poured it down in one gulp, which was both filling and refreshing.
Nan HuaiLin first went to a small clinic to get a fever-reducing injection, and then called a cab. With his current physical condition, he couldn’t squeeze into the subway, and he was afraid he would collapse.
Just as he got in the car, He DingHong’s phone call came.
“Hey, Brother Hong.” As soon as he opened his mouth, his throat hurt and his voice was too hoarse to speak.
“I heard you were hospitalized yesterday,” He DingHong said on the other side, “Are you feeling better?”
“Not so good.” Nan HuaiLin said.
He DingHong choked for a moment and stopped being polite to him and went straight to the point. “So what, can you come to the office today?”
Nan HuaiLin said, “I’m really having a hard time. If there’s anything you need, just say it over the phone.”
He could imagine how bad He DingHong’s face looked at the moment, but he really didn’t want to be called upon to come and go again, especially when the other person’s character was so bad.
He DingHong was silent for a short while and there was a clear displeasure in his voice, “It’s like this, it’s the same thing I told you last time. I conveyed your intention to Gao Tan, but he wants to meet you and talk to you alone, I..”
“Brother Hong,” Nan HuaiLin interrupted him, “I have made it very clear. I do not want to. No matter how tempting the offer, I will not change my mind. This matter is not negotiable, and you should not look for me again because of this matter. I have things to do, goodbye.”
Without giving He DingHong a chance to speak, Nan HuaiLin hung up the phone directly. He took a long breath and lowered the car window to let in the breeze, so as to clear his mind, which was burnt to a pulp.
It was only 10:30 a.m.when he arrived at the place, so Nan HuaiLin sat in the small garden downstairs for half an hour before going upstairs.
Hannibal greeted him warmly and almost threw him to the ground. He was so fragile now. He was usually always in good health, so it was unbelievable to be so sick after a little rain.
The fever-reducing injection did not help, and after a few hours of muddled work, Nan HuaiLin couldn’t hold it any longer. He set the alarm on his phone and lay down on the hall carpet, intending to rest for an hour before getting up to work.
An hour later, the alarm clock went off, but it didn’t wake Nan HuaiLin up.
The alarm clock rang every ten minutes until the phone ran out of battery and turned off automatically, and Nan HuaiLin still did not wake up.
Hannibal kept circling around Nan HuaiLin who was sleeping on the ground, but no matter how much he called, Nan HuaiLin did not move.
Hannibal then ran to the balcony and barked furiously.
The property owner received the complaint and called the owner. Fei Zheng received the call and gave the matter to Ruan Xin, who immediately contacted Nan HuaiLin, but his phone was turned off.
As soon as Ruan Xin entered the door, he shouted, “Nan, are you there?”
Hannibal came running wildly, biting his pant leg and dragging him inside.
Ruan Xin didn’t have time to change his shoes before he was dragged inside and saw Nan HuaiLin lying on the floor.
He was shocked, but Nan HuaiLin wouldn’t wake up. Ruan Xin immediately called 120.
