3 Chapter 3: Unique
I felt very dizzy and completely disoriented. I could sense the space around me moving and warping, but I couldn't find my bearings. Then I sensed the surroundings calm down.
When I looked around, I could see endless sand dunes, all the way until the far horizons. The sun shone like the most brightest thing I've ever seen. And it looked like the time was midday.
"Oh crap..", and I lost consciousness.
*** 7 hours later ***
When I opened my eyes, the blinding sun had disappeared, to be replaced by phenomena like Northern Lights in the sky. The desert sand felt cool and comforting for some reason. I began to feel like I was lying in my bed.
"System, are you there?" (MC)
I still didn't move from the spot where I woke up, and laid on the sand watching the majestic sight in the skies. A light breeze blew past me and cooled me further.
"I'll do the survey first." (MC)
"Well, I'm comfortable now, so I'll give it a 9. When that beam of light picked me, I almost felt like throwing up. Otherwise I'd rate a 10." (MC)
"I'll be honest, it felt a lot like kidnapping. I mean, I'm not complaining about coming into a new world and all, but it would've been better with a warning, you know." (MC)
"Yes, only one.
Why am I in a desert, alone? If I knew that ability creation has this kinda side effects, then I wouldn't have gone for such an OP Ability."
Wow, even the system was curious, huh?
"Well I can't pin point anything as a decisive element.
Too many things factor into this decision.
You've already told me, that I can go back to my old world. So, my options of retreat are locked.
I wasn't much interested in living in my old world anyway. So when you told me, that all evidences of my existence was erased, then there was no turning back.
I've actually accomplished nothing much back there. So, if you're wiping out my life, you could find it quite simple.
And though I have many loved ones and friends back home, it's not like they all care if I live or die anyway. To me they are my loved ones. To them, maybe I'm a nobody, or a distant relative or an acquaintance or an old friend. I maintain those relationships, so that I'm not fully cut out from all of society. Both my parents got divorced and then remarried to their new partners. Then I was just pushed away to live alone and given a huge amount of money for my expenses. At that time, I realized that humans are the most selfish beings ever created, and only in a moment of crisis will they try to work with each other.
I've had best friends, who've become strangers and strangers who became my close friends. None of those relationships last for long.
So to me, this decision to transmigrate, doesn't have any negative effects." (MC)
I realised that I just spoke a huge monologue. I probably needed to get that out of my chest anyway. Like a burden I've carried for many years just disappeared.
× Oh, you poor bastard! ×
"Who's there?" (MC)
I was alert and looked around but I found no one. That voice was male, and sounded quite familiar like a TV Quiz Host's voice speaking with the CNN accent. A lot like Mufasa from the Lion King.
× Don't bother looking. You can't see me. ×
"Who are you? John Cena?" (MC)
× No wonder you were abandoned. Did you crack lame jokes like this all the time? ×
"Nope. Just when I'm nervous." By then I calmed down, and thought of all the possibilities, and then I asked. "Are you God?"
× What makes you infer that? ×
"Well, I was talking to the system so, no one could hear me. And then suddenly you spoke. So you must be a more powerful being than the system. Then, you can only be God." (MC)
I heard laughter and then the voice spoke,
× Amusing. Well, you are both correct and incorrect. You are correct in your inference that I, am a higher ranked being than the system.
You are however, wrong in assuming than I am God.
I am not God. I don't even come minutely close to God.
I'm just one of the overseers, who watches over the system.×
Oh, a system overseer.
"Why are you here? Are you actually here?" (MC)
I could hear a lot of people laughing in response. After a few moments the voice replied, a giddy,
× Ah, I'm not actually there. I'm talking to you through the system. You see, there are a lot of people here watching you right now. It's quite amusing that you've developed such a personality while being a mortal.
Anyway, I'll not continue to spend your time.
We received a notification a while back when an S-class ability was created. So we decided to check it out and found you. ×
Huh? I created an S-class ability? [Fortified] is that powerfull?
"What do you mean S-class ability?" (MC)
× I forgot you were a novice. S-class abilities are those that can have potential to break natural laws. They have that potential. But, only if they're developed that way.
An SS-class ability can directly affect and manipulate the natural laws. ×
"Eh? So I can possibly go beyond the laws of nature with [Fortified]? Wow, I just wanted an ability that would make sure I'd stay alive in dangerous situations."
Little did I know that my answer would provoke uninterrupted laughter from all the overseers.
× My stomach hurts. Boy, it seems only fools like you can make S-class abilities.
A while back, there was a person like you who got transported to another world. Complete fool in behaviour, just like you. But he created an S-class ability when he arrived and went on to became the strongest in his world. Then later on he accepted the job and became and Overseer like me. Now, he's my boss.
He gave an option back then, which I'll give you now.
You can quit now and become an Overseer like us. Or you can continue to stay in that world and carry on.
You'll even be given a surprise gift.
But, If you stay in that world, then you'll never be allowed to be an Overseer.
So, what do you decide? Will you stay there? Or join us? ×
I remained silent. It looks like Overseers are powerful but, the job sounds boring.
"I'll stay here." I decided.
× Are you sure? ×
"Yes." (MC)
× *sigh* Alright, best of luck. Oh, and your gift is a low-level A.I to help you. For us it's quite useless, but for you it'll be the difference between hell and heaven. So, best of luck. ×
The voice faded into silence. And I continued to lay in the sand. Tomorrow will be a big day. It's still my first day in the new world afterall. Or is it my second?
Bah, who cares, I'll just lay here and watch the sky.

Far away in the infinite void.
× What an interesting kid. Too bad he didn't join us. He was quite...unique. ×
