Lord Titanheart

47 The Camp

It was raining and Leon was walking with the group towards the west. The splashing sound was coordinated with the steps of the soldiers, it sounded like basic rhythm. The newbies of the camp weren't like how they were used to be. Leon wasn't looking any different from others, he blended in with the group. His leather helmet covering his head from the rain, but it was smelly. At first he was uncomfortable with it, but as the time passed, he got used to it. He didn't think that the leather armor could protect him in the battlefield. It was just to show that they were the same side to other soldiers. Cannon fodders, they were just cannon fodders. They life didn't matter, if they were to die, some other villager would come and replaced them.

Leon's leather armor didn't look like new. He also knew that it wasn't new leather armor. There were some patches on the armor from other leathers. Basic color was same, so he didn't have any worries that he would be mistaken as an enemy. From the patches, Leon was sure that, his armor was used once, maybe more than that, after some soldiers bring back the original owner's body, the armor was patched and given to him. It was depressing to wear some dead man's armor, but he didn't have any choice.

The road was muddy and the new soldiers was walking with the same rhythm. At the front, there was an officer on his horse. The soldiers were following him. There wasn't any sound other than their footsteps among rain's, and occasionally some metal hitting metal from their weapons. The solemn aura of the officer affected the soldiers, so they didn't have any military aura around them. Even without participating the in war, they were looking like a defeated army. Leon noticed that, but he couldn't do anything to change. He was sure that, the officer should fire the soldiers up a bit before they arrived to the battle. Even they were cannon fodders, they were soldiers at the same time, their moral should be at the peak when they entered the battlefield, at least that was how Leon thought.

Leon didn't know what was the reason for this war or the side that he was going to fight for. He didn't talk with other soldiers, but he heard a few times that, the famine was going on with the lands and most of the soldiers came because they could eat in the military, they didn't have any lofty ideas about defending their homelands or defeating the enemy for the crown, they only entered the military because of the food. They might die on the battlefield, but they would die with a full stomach. It was depressing for Leon to hear that. Even though he knew that it was all illusion, he felt pity for them, they were all choosing to die for a few loaves of bread. There wasn't any glory if the people were hungry and because of that they entered the military.

After walking with the group, Leon could hear some battle-cries from up ahead. They had arrived, Leon didn't know if he should be happy about it. If he battled and gain recognition of the warmonger totem, he could leave this illusion, but he also didn't have his titanic strength in this illusion, so he was worried because he couldn't show his full potential. He could only fight with his spearmanship, maybe that was the way to gain recognition of the totem. But at least he already changed the secret manual of the army, so he wasn't going to be really helpless in the battlefield.

Leon and the new soldiers entered the camp of the army with the lead of the officer. Leon could see a lot of soldiers who were resting, some of them were injured and bandaged, and some of them were lying some stretchers under the rain. None of the soldiers bothered by the rain, they didn't have any strength to do so. Their eyes were looking empty and the depressing air around them was evident to Leon.

He thought that the officer wasn't good at leading an army, but seeing the state of the camp, he understood that whole army didn't have morale which one expect from an army. The officer who was leading them, didn't stop and lead them to an area, the group was looking at the state of the camp and questioned themselves, if joining the army was really a good choice.

Leon could tell that the group was doubting their decisions after seeing the camp. But he couldn't tell how someone could make an illusion which was so real. First, he thought that the warmonger totem was just a magical device of daemons, but after being inside and noticing that the illusions wasn't that much different from the reality. That could mean that the warmonger totem should be high ranked magical device. But none of them mattered at the moment, he didn't gain the approval of the totem nor he knew the exit.

When the group came to stop, they were in a spacious place. There wasn't anything else from a platform which was in front of them when they came to stop. Leon understood that there would be an officer who would come and encourage them or something on that line.

While they were waiting, the group didn't make any sound, and just looked at the platform and waited for somebody to come and give a speech. They didn't wait too long and an officer of the army came with full body armor, which was dented in some places, even some tearing in the armor could be seen. The officer didn't look very old, but had some white hairs at the area of his ears.

"Warriors, my name is Talas, I'm the general of the west front. I can understand that you didn't come here to protect dignity of Cenland. But either way you are soldiers of this kingdom, and I only want one thing from you, that is to fight until you breath no more!"

Leon heard the name of this kingdom for the first time since he came here, but it wasn't mattered at this point. He didn't have any interest in how the general was going to rise the spirits of the soldiers. His only goal was to show his talent and gain approval of the totem, or find a way to exit here.

The general also didn't give a long speech. After saying what he had to say he just left and divided the soldiers to the divisions which had need for fresh blood. Leon was assigned to second division. The second division was formed just spearmen.

Leon guided to the area of the second division without further ado. While he was guided, he also learned the army structure from the officer who was leading Leon and other spearmen. The first division was formed from cavalries and the third division was archers. The division didn't have any knights, so Leon could deduce that all of the soldiers in the divisions were just canon fodders.

The officer led them to the area of the second division and left. Leon didn't know what to do, so he just waited some other ranked soldier to come and assign him a duty. While he was waiting he also looked at the state of the division, but he could tell that it wasn't that different from the rest of the army. Leon sighed, he didn't have any expectations about this division already, but he noticed that wherever he went the situation didn't look good, so it means the state of the war wasn't at the best interest of Cenland. Maybe the real test was to change the flow of the war, but Leon didn't know any strategy to change the situation. If he had his real body, he could change the direction of the war. He didn't have any mana, he didn't have his titan body, he only had the newly changed secret army manual.

"What do you all waiting for? An invitation! Follow me." While Leon was thinking he and the others were called. They followed the guy who was clearly an officer, Leon didn't see his face, but he could clearly hear that he wasn't very satisfied with the current state of the war. He sounded impatient, but also without any energy.

They didn't walk too much and immediately arrived a large space with full of soldiers. Leon could understand that they were going to the war without any rest. When they arrived, the sound of the war horns blew.

"Advance!"

Someone from the front yelled, and the rest started to advance. Leon didn't know where he was going, so he just followed the rest. He was going to his first war in the illusion. He didn't know if could change the flow of the war, so he just entered the war of uncertainty.
