Demi-Human In The Wrong Time

39 Butting Heads To A Deal

Altair saw the malicious look in his eye and created a large thread instantly. It quickly grew out of the polished wooden floor, looking every bit like the wood it grew out of and was as thick as man's head. She threw it to wrap around Renald before he took his second step towards her.

Renald's eyes widened as he felt something wrap around his body. He quickly looked down and saw nothing there. Whatever was grabbing him he couldn't see it.

In the next instant he was lifted into the air and slammed into the table. The table easily broke under the force of the blow and it proceeded to slam Renald into the ground below it, leaving a cracked mess in the hardwood floor.

Altair wasn't done with him yet. She wanted to make sure he was completely neutralized. So she had the thread lift him up and slammed him into the wall with the same force, cracking it as well. She then flung him across the room and he crashed into her closet, destroying the door to it on impact, and smashing into the wall inside.

Clothes flew everywhere and some were entangled on Renald's body as he then slowly started to fall to the ground. But Altair had some more Mana left so she dismissed the first thread and created another one right next to Renald. It wrapped him up again and slammed him into the ground another two times before she had burned all she had away.

Renald had started to use his Spiritual Energy after the first blow he took. The first hit to the ground was startlingly heavy to him. The rest lacked the punch of the first one thanks to his Spiritual Energy so he didn't take any real lasting damage beyond the first hit. Still he chose to stay lying on the ground as he looked up at the ceiling. What he just experienced should have been impossible. There was no Inborn Ability that let people toss others around like ragdolls. So he considered everything that they discussed so far and he came to some odd conclusions. He would need to test to see which one was true.

Altair had used up all her Mana for the time being and she felt light headed and empty. She also saw Renald sit up and cursed mentally. She didn't think he could survive that. Now she had used all her power and couldn't defend herself.

Renald stood to his feet and dusted himself off before he walked toward Altair with a neutral expression as he said, "Well that was entertaining. Go on, do it again."

Altair couldn't do it again. Renald didn't know that for sure but suspected it or why would she stop.

"There are some things you need to understand about laying your hands on the leader of a noble family," Renald said with a sickening smile on his face. "I did receive a report about your reaction to Donel's powers and found it interesting at the time. I wonder how you will react to this then." Once he finished speaking, he displayed his Spiritual Self for Altair to see and feel while still walking towards her.

Altair gasped and fell to her knees as she felt a pressure she didn't think could exist. She stared wide-eyed at Renald as his body was enveloped in a harsh orange glow. Her heart pounded in her chest and she found it difficult to breath while she broke out in a cold sweat and her face paled.

When Renald got in range to grab Altair he reached his hand out menacingly toward her head. Altair flinched slightly as he proceeded to rub her head comfortingly, at the same time he quashed his pressure and the glow around him faded into nothing. This caused Altair to blink several times before scampering back quickly.

Renald smiled at her as he said, "I think I know what I need to know now." He walked over to a chair that wasn't broken in the slight scuffle they had and sat down on it before putting his hands on his lap. He then looked at Altair and said, "This.. kingdom you're from. That place only has swords and bows doesn't it?" He brought up his communicator that was around his wrist as he asked his question and produced the Holodisplay images of a sword and bow on it at the same time to emphasize his meaning. He wouldn't let Altair dodge out of the question by claiming to not know what he meant.

The sudden projection of imagines stunned Altair briefly. It was displaying something she knew and was shown right in front of her. It had been a year since she last saw a Holodisplay so she couldn't stop herself from gaping at it for a long moment. Renald didn't seem to mind as he waited patiently for her answer. His work could wait since this was more important to him.

Once Altair recovered she felt caught. She knew that he knew that she couldn't defend herself against him anymore. Still, she didn't want to leave it up to her thoughts as she said, "You said no more questions."

Renald's smile didn't fade as he tilted his head and said, "You have no more of this Mana you speak of. You can't defend yourself. Just answer the question and it could change my mind on what your fate is."

Sure enough she was caught. Altair frowned as she replied, "Yes. Those are the type of weapons we have."

Renald's smile deepened. It wasn't hard for Renald to figure everything out now that that simple thing had been confirmed. With all of the evidence before him he was able to easily figure everything out.

The strange clothes and items Altair had on her when they found her. They were all crudely made of materials similar to what they could find in ancient history but none of them matches any of their records. Combined with her strange power and the odd words she used to describe her powers, along with her being able to do what should be impossible with an Inborn Ability, it didn't take much to eliminate basically all of the theories except for one: Magic.

Renald could not believe his luck. The golden egg that wandered into his hands turned out to be more valuable than gold.

He had come across someone who could use the fictional power of Magic to do unbelievable things. He was pretty sure about this anyway. It appeared that this girls Mana was far smaller than it once was or perhaps she had something before that gave her more of it. But in either case she would prove to be a very powerful tool if he used her correctly. And perhaps, in the future, he could get her and his son together and maybe he could have a child that would be able to use Spiritual Energy along with Mana to do unparalleled things.

Renald asked, "What you did earlier, was that with Mana as well?"

Altair begrudgingly nodded, "That it was."

Renald leaned forward in his chair as he stated, "I have a proposal for you, girl. But before I tell you it I shall offer you some information about the place you are in as a show of good faith." He cleared his throat before continuing because he knew there was quite a bit to go over. "The place you are in and everyone around you, none of it was made or is used by this Mana you have. In fact, there is nobody around that can use Mana like you or has Mana like you. Furthermore, nobody knows what Mana is here. I only know it as some kind of energy and I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate. We have something different. We have a Spiritual Self, which you could consider to be similar to your Mana in that we can do some extraordinary things with it. But I suspect it is ultimately weaker than the Mana you have."

Altair listened to what he had to say with a neutral expression. It was more of what she already knew by now. Liam had essentially told her enough for her to figure everything out on her own. She still wanted to know if she could get this Spiritual Self that she had been hearing about. Since Renald had brought it up, she might as well take the chance and ask, "Mind if I ask something about that?"

Renald paused and gave her a wry smile, "I suppose knowing more about it wouldn't hurt and would allow you to get a better picture of things. Go ahead."

She took a slightly deeper breath than normal before asking, "How do I get a Spiritual Self?"

Renald smirked at her foolish question. "Impossible. Once you are born it becomes impossible to gain a Spiritual Self. We Humans had to go through many generations before all of us had one once we were gifted the technology to give it to us. If you tried to go through the same process now your insides were turn inside out and your brain would melt."

'That sounds like a terrible way to die,' Altair thought to herself as she shifted in place slightly before turning away from him. "That's all then, continue."

He leaned back in his chair as he spoke with a serious expression, "Anyway, here's the proposal now that you have that information. You have two choices. The first is I can imprison you in a dark dungeon where you are used as a breeding tool until the day you die. The second is you join my family and work for the interest of my family. The choice is yours."

Altair's expression turned foul. "As if that's a real choice." It seemed to match up with everything that Liam had warned her about. Still, it made her blood run cold when it was shoved in her face.

Renald chuckled briefly, "It's the only choice you have."

Altair sighed before saying, "I have a condition."

Renald tilted his head, "You really think you can put conditions on this?"

Altair frowned as she said, "I still have enough Mana to end my life right now. So of course I can." She didn't actually have any Mana left but she wanted to gamble on the fact that she could do it later even if he knocked her unconscious immediately. Besides, he had experienced some of her Magic firsthand. Surely he knew that he wouldn't be able to stop her from doing it to herself.

Renald frowned slightly, "What condition."

Altair boldly stated, "I want full rights as a Human and to never be forced to do something I don't agree with." She was, essentially, putting her foot down against being made into a servant or bed warmer for Renald's family. That was one fate she wanted to avoid at all costs. Since that was the case it was better to guarantee her rights as a Human instead of as a Demi-Human since they probably didn't have Demi-Humans either. This way she would be treated as a person first and foremost and she could refuse to do things she didn't want to.

Renald's brow raised slightly, "A Human huh? You mean you don't want to be a servant, right?

"Yes."

Renald rubbed his chin before saying, "Then I have a condition for you as well." He needed to get the story to fit properly for everything to work out the best in his interest. For him to do that he had to restrict one thing on Altair that he was aware of. "Your real name is Altair Maxwell, correct?"

Altair simply nodded in response.

Renald then stated, "You will have to hide that name from now on. It will ruin the cover story I have made for you. From now on you will be called Aria Marnithok. When you are given tasks in the future or there is some need to secretly contact you for something, we will use your real name. Otherwise, no one can know who you are. Do you agree?"

Altair's lips twitched. It wasn't a bad deal on the surface. In fact if she got what she wanted she didn't mind having a name like that. It just felt dirty to her. To have to get rid of her name and take this Human name felt wrong. Still, she had little choice in the matter if she wanted her condition and besides, it wasn't like she was permanently throwing it away. Thus, she sighed heavily and stated, "Fine."
