On a Blank Canvas

19 Saved

A few minutes prior, down below in the alleyway, Kevin's lackeys had watched in shock as their boss chased after Al, unable to hurt him at all with his flaming attacks.

They watched the two of them go up the walls and onto the roof, beyond their field of view.

They waited down below, waiting for the battle above to end, despite not being able to see them fighting, the powerful strikes hitting against an impenetrable shield was constantly heard.

At first, despite being shocked that someone survived their bosses spell completely unhurt and defending against all his attacks, they still had confidence that Kevin would come out at the top like he always has.

But after nearly ten minutes and the sounds of battle from above were still being heard, they started to have doubts, this whole time they had also been watching over the three inside the shield, making sure they wouldn't escape under their watch.

They hadn't started attacking Harry's shield again, wanting to save their strength and Vaes incase they needed it to escape or fight.

They didn't know that Harry's Vaes had almost run out, though some of them were able to use the scan spell, they had forgotten to use it as they didn't use it often and it wasn't very useful due to their lack of knowledge.

"Boss.. Is gonna win right?..." A lackey suddenly filled in the tense silence, all of they were looking above them, even though they couldn't see the battle happening.

"He would've beaten anyone else a while ago.."

"Hey, you forget that boss can only deal with those under silver IV status, any higher and he'd only be able to handle those slightly stronger or those weak against fire magic."

"Impossible!! That fucker can't be silver IV and beyond! I didn't get a signal!" Jack shouted out, not believing that he had endangered the group by targetting someone beyond their strength.

"You fucking dumbass Jack! You forget that there are some who turn off the signals on their cards?"

While it wasn't unheard of, it is rare that those with a status below gold would turn off the signal on their card, even those who turned gold had taken advantage of it when they were of lower status.

It made it less likely for you to be mistreated or attacked and gave you many advantages in society that made your life much easier and thus made you focus more on training yourself and studying to grow stronger.

This didn't apply for gold status mages and above as the things society offered could no longer sufficiently aid in their growth, thus majority of them turned off their signals in order to hide their strength.

They were also strong enough to defend themselves against the majority of who would target them.

"You think.. he's got gold status?" a lackey asked, fearing the possibility.

"No... Though i'm confident he's over Silver IV, i'm sure he's still below gold status, or he would've finished boss off ages ago"

"Then let's go up and help boss! Even though we can't contribute much, we could at least distract him while boss attacks him" a lackey suggested, eager to help his boss out.

"What about these three?" A lackey pointed behind him, Harry's shield still being up, being able to hear their whole conversation.

"Leave em, doesn't matter if they escape, it's more important to help boss beat that guy"

Everyone agreed to go up to help Kevin, deciding to forget about their previous victims, one of them cast spell over the rest, as they all jumped up the walls of the building, though at a much slower pace than Kevin and Al had.

Silence ensued in the alleyway, Harry had kept his shield up, just incase they came back. It didn't seem like Zeena would allow Gin to get anymore hurt by moving his severely injured body, so they couldn't escape even if he wanted to.

A minute or two had passed, the sounds of battle had stopped, Harry became tense, not knowing who the victor was.

Waiting a while longer, no one had come down to the alleyway, did they take each other out? Did they leave after they had won?

Before he could think of more reasons, the sky that was visible around him from the alleyway was filled with crimson flames, scaring him out of his wits as he had assumed that the battle was over.

Zeena, who had been focusing on healing Gin had also become frightened by the sky being filled with fire.

Small chunks of debris fell down from the building on his left, falling onto his shield but only slightly draining his remaining Vaes.

The fire above seemed to rise up into the sky, revealing to them that it was actually a giant flaming pillar going straight into the sky.

They watched on in awe and fear, before the pillar disappeared seconds later.

Seeing that the pillar had disappeared, Harry didn't assume that battle had ended like he previously did, just hoping that the person he saw was the victor.

A short while after the flaming pillar had disappeared, a figure jumped down from above and landed softly on the ground, just a few meters away from Harry's shield.

Behind him, were the bodies of their assailants floating in the air, all of them sporting heavy injuries. Harry was shocked that the person who had almost killed Gin had the most injuries, especially his black and charred arm.

They all seemed to be unconscious, instead of being dead.

The figure was the person who they had seen survive the leader of their assailants attack, and it seemed like he had defeated them all in the end.

He casually walked towards them with the bodies still floating behind him, he held an expression as if nothing had happened.

Though Harry was grateful to this person for saving them he still felt a little fear seeing how casual and emotionless he was, and how he easily beat all of them without a hint of damage.

He knew that even if their savior didn't save them out of goodwill or had bad intentions towards them, they wouldn't be able to do anything even if Gin was at his best and if he had all his Vaes back.

Since that was the case, Harry dispelled his shield and went down onto his knees. There was no such thing as magic fatigue so no matter how much spells you used or how long you used it for, it would never affect you mentally or physically.

That only applied for safe and authorized spells, as some illegal spells utilized damaging your mind or body to strengthen the power of the spells, like Kevin's Crimson Pillar.

Some very complicated spells would cause mental backlash when failed to cast, or if the caster did not hold a high proficiency in it and thus backfired on them.

Some attack spells could also damage the caster when it backfires or wasn't cast properly.

So the only time caster would experience negative effects from using magic would be when they had done something wrong or were using self-damaging spells.

Harry didn't experience negative effects from using his magic, but was just mentally exhausted after he had thought that the three of them were going to die today, on the day they had thought would change their lives forever by participating in the Noraxia Entrance Exam.

"I..I know that you've already done so much by saving us, but.. could you save our friend as well?..." Harry asked, it was quite a long shot asking someone who seemed to be a battle specialist to save Gin.

"Sure, it didn't take much effort to beat those guys anyways" Their savior replied.

"Y-you can actually save him?!" Harry was surprised that he had agreed, he would have expected that their savior would say that he'll try, but his phrasing made it seem like saving him was a given.

"It'd be kinda heartless and dumb if i lied right?" He said, saying it as if it was commln sense.

Harry blushed a little, but was actually very happy on the inside that Gin would not die.

Floating the unconscious bodies onto the floor, he approached Zeena, who had not heard their conversation, or even noticed their saviors presence, being totally focused on trying to save Gin.

Using scan on Gin, Al was able to notice that his internals were heavily damaged, being the main reason why Gin was on the verge of death.

He could sense that Zeena was casting healing magic onto Gin, just from his Vaes perception and using scan on her, recognizing it as the most basic light healing magic.

That spell at her proficiency would only be effective on small cuts, light burns and bruises, the effect it had even on the superficial burns on his body was minuscule, only healing the skin on his body.

Slowly approaching the two and going down on one knee beside her, he placed his hand on her shoulder and asked,

"Give me a try"

Zeena turned towards him in surprise and a bit of fear, but upon seeing that Harry was perfectly fine and looking towards then with a less tense expression, and seeing the person who had almost killed Gin being severely injured and unconscious, she was able to come to a conclusion on who he was.

She silently, but reluctantly stopped her spell, and moving a bit to the side to make space for Al, still wanting to stay by Gins side.

Al took over the space, placing his hand onto Gin's chest. A few seconds had passed and Zeena didn't feel anything or saw anything that signified that a spell was being cast.

Thinking that Al couldn't actually heal him, Zeena became angry that he even asked her to give him a go, wanting to open her mouth to tell him that she'd take over, at least she was able to do something..

Before she could do so, she noticed the burns and and bruises started to heal and lessen, until they were completely gone, the expression on Gin's face was no longer one of pain, but of calm.

She knew that Gin had been saved.
