16 Duel 5
Vladimir walked slowly towards the knight. Every step that he took seemed heavy and unsteady. A pressure unlike anything he had felt before weighed him down.
'I can see the Grim Reaper smiling at me. My insticts scream that there is no way to win this fight' the youth thought as he stopped his steps. He stared at Edward's face for a moment before letting a deep sigh to escape from his mouth.
'They say that when you die, your life flashes before your eyes. It would be nice to see my mother again. Maybe I'll remember her voice or the warmth of her hug'.
Despite his dark thoughts, Vladimir was actually smiling. He was scared to the point that he was trempling, but he didn't back down. He couldn't. The whole purpose of this fight was exactly this moment. He knew that he didn't stand a chance against Edward, he wasn't stupid. The first thing that his foster father taught him, was to understand the limits of his strength.
'This is the final strike. My long awaited revenge finally starts with this very first step. Death or survival. Let's show to the world that no matter what awaits me, I Vladimir Erickson will face it with a smile' . Any hesitation and fear he felt before, disappeared like smoke. The only thing that anyone could see on his face was determination, ambition, as well as excitement.
The youth slowly became expressionless. His long silver hair became as bright as the sun, while an armor made by sand appeared on his body. He knew that the appearance of the third element would cause an uproar not only to the Empire, but to the whole continent. He could already hear the cries around him, but he didn't give any importance to them. He raised his greatsword that it's blade was covered with frost and ran towards Edward with an unstoppable momentum.
The middle aged man didn't stay on the defensive either. Seeing that Vladimir was going all out, he took a deep breath and ran towards the youth too.
Firstly, it was the clash of the two weapons. The silver haired youth finally understood why mithril was considered the nemesis of the magicians. He could clearly see that the the sword of the knight could cut through his magic with ease before hitting his greatsword. The force of the strike at the same time almost made him to drop his weapon.
Vladimir clenched his teeth and focused his mind on the water element. The sudden rainstorm gave him the chance to create a trump card. Although, he couldn't interfere directly with the raindrops falling from the sky, since that would mean he had total control towards the water element, that didn't mean that he couldn't use this weather to hide his magic. The silver haired youth didn't stop using water magic from the moment his eyes became transparent. As a result, he could feel his mana on the ground that the knight was standing. He didn't hesitate and made the water on the ground to transform into frosty spikes.
Edward felt a sharp pain on his feet, but his face remained unchanged. He didn't even feel surprised by this unexpected attack, but instead he was relieved. The veteran knight knew that the young man in front of him was not simple and that if he had a last card to play so that he could turn the tables around, now that would be the moment.
Vladimir frowned upon seeing that the knight didn't even flinch from his sneak attack. Since Edward didn't drop his guard, his only chance was to take advantage of the fact that the knight couldn't chase him around with his feet injured. With long range magic, he could attack him unstoppably until he was exhausted and then finish him off.
He tried immediately to retreat backwards, but how could his opponent let him do whatever he wanted to. Edward used his sword to cut through the spikes and then threw his weapon at the young man with all his power. Upon seeing the actions of the knight, Vladimir was filled with despair. He instinctively knew that he didn't have the time to avoid the attack or block it with his greatsword. The only thing that Vladimir could do was trying using earth magic. Although, he didn't have expectations that his magic could stop his opponent's attack, at least he hoped that it could delay it. Alas, when he saw that his enemy's weapon continued to fly unhindered, only then did he truly realise how terrifying mithril really was.
' Too late for regrets' Vladimir thought as he smiled.
