Urban Tales of Demons and Spirits

Chapter 22 Teasing And Anti-teasing

Is this what you want to say to me? I looked at Wen Jiubo and did not know whether to laugh or cry.

“Um, yes, of course, I don’t want him to leave,” I said deliberately. “After all, he came all the way here to see us, and I don’t know when we’ll meet again.”

Wen Jiubo’s face became more gloomy, and he glared at me like an angry child.

“Is that really what you think?”

I looked at his face and felt more amused, so I answered him, dragging each word. “Of course it is.”

His eyebrows knitted tighter, and then to my surprise, he suddenly grabbed my arms. I stumbled a few steps and fell into his arms.

I was suddenly faced with eyes as black and shiny as obsidian staring at me.

“What about me? You haven’t seen me for three days, did you miss me?”

I was stunned for a moment and then answered goofily, “Yes, I wished you were here when we had trouble solving the case..”

I suddenly stopped and looked back at Wen Jiubo in surprise.

I slowly realized something.

“Wait, Wen Jiubo.” I pushed Wen Jiubo’s away and looked at him in amusement. “Are you .. jealous?”

Wen Jiubo’s expression instantly changed. He turned his head aside.

“No.”

I came closer. “You are, aren’t you?”

“I said no.” Wen Jiubo looked at me warily with his arms crossed. “Why would I be jealous of that kind of person? It is unnecessary!”

“Don’t deny it. Clearly, you’re jealous of him.”

“Nope!”

I didn’t think an elegant person like him would ever admit he was jealous even if I asked this question over and over for the whole day. Therefore, I changed my expression and looked at him seriously.

“Zhu Xuan is only a friend.”

Wen Jiubo looked at me in anger. “Who asked you to explain? I said I’m not jealous, I simply just hate that guy.”

“You’re the only one I like.”

Wen Jiubo was a little panicked after hearing my straightforward confession. Though he always seemed calm and dispassionate, his eyes were now shining with uncertainty.

He angrily looked at me. “Gu Yu! When did you learn to tease me?”

I knew I shouldn’t, but I laughed loudly. The way Wen Jiubo reacted was really cute, I think it was sort of my revenge since he used to make fun of me.

However, although I teased him, I meant every word I said.

Wen Jiubo had something special that I simply couldn’t resist.

At first, I was attracted by this strange charm, and I left my boring ordinary life and voluntarily followed him into a peculiar world.

Later on, I was fascinated by his power, his calmness and confidence that he maintained under any circumstances that made me want to stay by his side.

Even though I knew his true identity as the nine-tailed fox and I knew his shameful past, my affection for him remained the same.

Even though I still did not know why Wen Jiubo was fond of me from the beginning, I could obviously feel that he changed since we first met.

In the past, even though he often said lover’s prattle to me, those words always felt insincere, as if he deliberately teased me for some reason. However, the awkwardness and jealousy he showed as if he was a little kid, and the arrogance after his real purpose was exposed, those were probably his real feelings.

Could it be that.. after everything we went through Wen Jiubo finally opened his heart?

Human emotions were quite strange. I used to think that I was an indifferent person and I was not keen on social interactions or relationships. Whether it was male or female, I always kept a proper distance.

I even believed that I might never fall in love with someone, due to family reasons.

And when I believed that, Wen Jiubo came into my life like a miracle.

He was as dangerous as a wild animal and as dazzling as dancing flames.

“What are you thinking of?”

When I pulled my wandering mind back, Wen Jiubo was looking at me with an inquiring expression.

“No, nothing,” I hurriedly avoided his question and changed the subject. Fortunately, it was something I had planned to ask him.

“Anyway, you said you couldn’t come with us because you needed to investigate that Taoist priest, and you also said you already had some clues. What the hell were you up to?”

“You want to know?”

Wen Jiubo again showed the sly, fox-like expression I was so familiar with. He stopped drinking his tea.

I nodded. I did want to know, and I did not intend to hide that from him. Even when Zhu Xuan and I were solving the case together, we were often curious about what he was doing.

“Well, Bai and I went to save the world,” Wen Jiubo said solemnly.

Before he could finish, I punched him on the head. “Can you stop joking around? I told you so many times, we are discussing a serious matter! Be serious!”

Wen Jiubo rubbed his head as if he was mistreated.

“Who said I was joking? I’m serious, I’m telling you the truth.”

When I saw his unwavering eyes, I was a little afraid that I misunderstood him. But I had to refute because I did not want to look dumb.

“Are you serious? I don’t see any signs that the world was about to end.”

“But, Gu Yu, have you ever considered this matter?” Wen Jiubo, on the other hand, did not look like he was joking at all. Instead, he sat up straight and asked me sternly, “Why is there in almost every story, someone or some group of antagonists who tries to destroy the world?”

Not again.. another thing I was familiar with coming from Wen Jiubo, the weird questions he asked. A sudden question that appeared to be unrelated to our previous conversation, but my experience told me that he must have asked this with a purpose.

Therefore, no matter how weird or nonsensical his question may seem to be, I had to think carefully before answering.

“There is no particular reason.. but if there is one, I would say it’s required by the plot? Like novels, they need a villain to show how brave the main character is. Otherwise, if all the main character does in the story is to eat and sleep every day, no one will read it.”

Wen Jiubo nodded approvingly. “You’re right. It’s indeed a very important reason, but you’re wrong on one point. In literary works such as novels, this phenomenon is indeed exaggerated, but it definitely stems from reality.”

“It does?” I asked confusedly. “But I thought it only happened in novels..”

“Only in novels?” Wen Jiubo interrupted me and asked. “In other words, you think there are no villains in the real world trying to destroy the world?”

I shook my head in vain. Destroying the world? That was insane. I could understand that there were serious crimes such as murder and robbery, However, the kind of villains Wen Jiubo described were just complete lunatics.

The reason was quite simple. If the world was destroyed, then human beings would no longer exist, that is to say, the culprit himself would disappear as well. What benefits would the culprit gain from this?

I explained my opinion to Wen Jiubo.
