Urban Tales of Demons and Spirits

Chapter 4 Reunion 2

I looked at Wen Jiubo in surprise, and I vaguely guessed something.

“So.. that is to say, the reason all of my memories came back when I met you, was because you remembered my whole life?”

Wen Jiubo nodded. “And thus through my memories are you resurrected. Now your existence depends on my memory. As long as I don’t forget you, you won’t disappear. And I will never forget you.”

For that moment, it was a little difficult to describe how I felt; shocked, confused, astounded, and a little amused.

“I don’t believe it. You’re just an old fox. Besides, you’re no different from others. How could you remember me when I lost memories of myself? Furthermore, it’s been six years,” I asked doubtfully.

“Nothing particular, when there’s a will, there’s a way.” The light in his eyes turned dim. He looked away as if trying to dodge the question. Then I saw his right hand hurriedly pressing on his left arm.

His arm.. that’s right, when I tried to grab his wrist a moment ago, he quickly shook off my hand as if I hurt him.

“What’s wrong with your arm?” I asked.

“Nothing.” Wen Jiubo hastily hid his left hand behind him and changed the subject. “Well, I’d like to know if you have any methods to escape from here..”

I did not pay attention to his words. I grabbed his arm and rolled up his sleeve.

He gasped because of the pain, and what I saw left me speechless.

There were wounds all over Wen Jiubo’s arm, made by a knife or other sharp tool. And they were not fresh wounds but seemed to be made over and over as they healed. The old scars were covered by new wounds, and the new wounds were torn up after they formed scabs. I could hardly look at those scary wounds.

Those new wounds and old scars formed two Chinese characters: Gu Yu.

Wen Jiubo hurriedly pulled his arm back as if it was burning

I looked up at him in astonishment. “You, what is this——”

“Nothing, forget it.” Wen Jiubo hid the scarred left arm with his right hand. He pressed those scars so hard that just looking made me feel his pain.

“Is this how you managed to remember me?” I did not listen to him and moved over. I stared him in the eyes. ” Did you plan this from the beginning?”

Wen Jiubo looked at me angrily. He then stood up and walked away from me. “Or what else? Would it have been better if I simply ignored you being erased by the timeline in order to save my own life?”

Instead of getting angry, I laughed and hurriedly catch up with him.

“You’re crazy. Did you really prepare yourself to not see me for six years?”

Wen Jiubo’s face looked cold, he sped up as if he did not want to talk to me. But how could I let him run away? I caught up with him immediately.

“Also, if you wanted to remember my name, you don’t need to scar yourself like that. Well, couldn’t you just get a tattoo?” I felt that I had never been so cheeky in my life. “Or maybe those six years without me made you miss me too much?”

Wen Jiubo stopped as if he gave in. He glared at me. “I’ll never tattoo your name on my skin.”

“Ouch, that’s so harsh!” I pretended that I was hurt by his words.

“Besides, the name is just a symbol.” Wen Jiubo turned around and looked at me. “Without the person who has that name, it’s meaningless. It’s useless if you just remember a name. You have to remember everything that name represents as well. Like your appearance, age, educational background, family, the places you’ve lived and all your experiences since birth.”

“..So, have you investigated everything about me in these six years?” Wen Jiubo had surprised me yet again.

Wen Jiubo looked away and became silent. Just when I thought he refused to answer me by idly staring at the corner of the wall, he said softly.

“Ten years.”

“What?” I did not hear him clearly.

“It’s six years in the world of the living,” he said calmly, “but you should have noticed that in this gap, time passes at a much slower pace. So for me, it’s been ten years.”

I looked at him as my eyes became watery.

This was really too much. Before I gathered the necessary courage to come here, I definitely told myself to keep it together and not shed a single tear.

However, it didn’t take long for him to stir my feelings, Wen Jiubo rapped me on my head.

“Ouch! What are you doing?” I rubbed my head and asked.

“So you can still feel pain,” Wen Jiubo said cynically. “I thought you were lost in your own fantasy.”

“Hey, why are you so unreasonable!?” I argued angrily. “What a waste that I just felt touched by your words!”

“Is that so? It’s a pity that your feelings can’t help us get out of this place,” Wen Jiubo casually rebutted. He looked around, studying the bare walls.

Yes, speaking of which, wasn’t the only purpose that I used all my effort to come to this barren place just to rescue this moron? However, after finding him, my state of mind was completely messed up by all those things and almost forgot my purpose.

“By the way, before I came here, Mr. Cat told me that I couldn’t help you out even if I found you,” I said anxiously. “Well, he said..”

“He said that since my physical body is gone, then even if I manage to escape from this place, I would only become an evil spirit. Because even though my soul still exists, there is no physical body for me in the world of the living,” Wen Jiubo interrupted. “Is that right?”

I nodded. It seemed that he knew those things better than I did.

“That’s why I had to let myself know when I would die ——or to know that I will die in the near future.” There was a meaningful smile on his face. “So that I can have time to prepare for my imminent death, to avoid my death. That sounds like a total paradox from a scientific point of view, doesn’t it?”

I was quite confused about what he was trying to say.

‘”What do you mean? Are you saying..you have a plan?”

“Of course I do.” Wen Jiubo winked at me. “I’m a fox with nine lives.”
