The Woods Of Night: Book One of the Kasai Series

5 Chapter 5

The door to Alina's room slowly shut as she seeked refuge from her brother's tedious lessons. Alina sighed as she slumped onto the floor. The cold floor that touched her bare skin made her shiver. In her mind she thought of how useless these lessons were. She could teach herself. With a dissapointed face, she laid down on her bed. Her thoughts overwhelmed her mind. The sky outside grew dark outside as a storm rolled in. The sound of thunder and the flash from lightning calmed Alina. Her eyelids grew heavy as her mind cleared. Her eyes shut and all around her dissapeared.

When Alina woke up the smell of smoke wafted in her room. She sat up and heard the sound of cracking wood and crackling fire. She looked towards her fireplace only to find that it wasn't lit. She threw her blanket onto the floor and jumped out of bed. She looked at her door. The orange glow from outside her room worried her. She walked to the door and opened it. A wave of heat hit her straight in the face and she immediately started sweating. "SIMON, SIMON!!" Alina yelled at the fire. She got no reply. She knew her brother was gone. The fire would have been out. The only reason it wouldn't be out already is if it was.... enchanted. Some other wizard of witch did this. Alina slammed her door shut and grabbed a sack off the wall. She ran to her closet and stuffed as many clothes and supplies as she could inside. She tied the bag shut and realised she needs to find a way out and take Sinin with her. She looked at her window and took a breath. She grabbed Sinin out of his cage and stuck him in her pocket. She ran to the window and was ready to jump, when she saw the glimmer of a sword and a tiara on her desk. She stopped and set down her sack. She quickly picked up her sword and Its sheath and put it on. She held the tiara in her hands. She stared at the encrusted gems. She opened her sack again and stuck it inside. She picked the sack up and hopped onto the window sill. She looked down at the ground so far away. She whispered a spell that would help her get down. She looked back into her room, sighed. She turned her head back and jumped.
