Chapter 5: ITS ALL BECAUSE OF YOU!
John was the leader of the farmers before they quit. He tried his best to persuade them against quitting, but it was useless. The results of their efforts was in front of him. They got nothing, absolutely nothing.
He still remembered the day after the rainstorm.
The group of farmers looked at the empty farms with crops scattered here and there. Some of the younger farmers were crying their hearts out, while the older farmers looked at the farms stonily, wanting to cry but having no tears.
One of the farmers who started farming quite recently, called Doran, began screaming till his throat got hoarse as he stared at the blue sky, "WHY ANCESTORS?! WHAT HAVE WE EVER DONE TO ANGER YOU?! ALL WE WANTED WAS FOOD TO FEED OUR FAMILIES!"
One of the older farmers gently patted him on the shoulder and said, "Calm down Doran. Don't anger the ancestors more. We are just atoning the sins that we may have committed unknowingly."
The people of Lyria had strange and contradictory beliefs. They believed that the people who died would become God's followers and rule over the worlds. What would god do then? They did not know nor care.
There were many religions and beliefs present in this medieval world called Dilea. One of the most prevalent religions was the holy church's beliefs, which were quite... dictatorial.
According to their beliefs, there was only one god, and the people had to be absolutely faithful to him. They couldn't doubt him, or speak against him, or they would be condemned and even hanged to death in kingdoms that were ruled by the heads of the holy churches.
The people believed in the holy church's described god with fear, rather than devotion.
The holy church condemned doing deeds they called... 'unholy', which for some reason didn't apply to the holy church or it's subordinates.
It condemned murders, but the church itself massacred people who had other beliefs or did not believe in their God.
It murdered innocent girls calling them 'witches', if they did not want to become puppets for the holy church.
It made kings of kingdoms puppets for them, or took over kingdoms with internal revolts.
The people who believed in the holy church's sayings acted like they were blind. They did not care about the atrocities the holy church had commited, or more like, they purposefully did not think or try to know about these atrocities as they were afraid it would shake their belief. And what would that lead to? Most probably contempt from other believers or death depending in which kingdom they lived in.
The holy church condemned prostitution, but it's priests regularly visited brothels.
But of course, the holy church did try to hide it's misdeeds and act divine. But it was not really hard to find out about their deeds.
But, it was not like the holy church and it's followers were all bad.
There were some priests and believers who followed the teachings of the holy church faithfully. They did not eat meat or hurt animals.
All in all, the holy church's teachings on the whole were not bad. It was the head priests of the holy church who used these teachings in the wrong way that were bad.
Doran stopped screaming and looked at the ground blankly for a few seconds. He suddenly seemed to have a realization as he turned towards John and said with fury, "IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF YOU! THE FARMERS WERE GOING TO QUIT LAST TIME! YOU STOPPED THEM, AND THAT GAVE ME A CHANCE TO JOIN AFTERWARDS! IF ONLY YOU HAD NOT STOPPED THEM, THEY WOULD ALL GO TO HUNTING AND EVERYONE WOULD-"
An older farmer slapped Daron across his face.
