36 Coconut, Cotton and Coal

When we reach our rendezvous point, chief Harvard already there waiting for us. He's grinning from ear to ear when see us walking together in such intimate manner, but saying nothing about it. After we close enough with him, I see some coconuts fruit's lying in the sand near his house.

"Chief Harvard, that's...."

"Oh this is Klapa fruit that I found during exploration, its only can be found near the beach. I bring some to eat that at home"

"So how the soil condition in that area chief?"

"Perfect! I found the spot that fit the requirement for make garam field. There's also a stream there for the water source. There are also hills with possible mineral resources. I take some stones for Lukas to analyze"

"That's good news chief. Our part there only got cliff area and a small stream."

"Ah, that can't made for settlement. Ah right, master Ikki, you seem to have knowledge for metal sources, maybe you can at the stone that I bring from there before I handed to Lukas"

He pulls something from his bag and take out a metallic blackish stone from there and handed to me. I receive the stone from him and take a look at it. This pores, metallic luster, black dust from friction with my hand, this must be it, Antrasit.

"Chief! This is not mineral stone but also valuable stone. In my world this called coal. And this can be used to make fire and can replace firewood"

"Coal? Can be burn? Can replace firewood too?"

"Yes chief, and the fire generated from coal is better than firewood. Mister Lukas will glad to have this coal because it can be used to melt the ore and mineral stone"

"That good? I'm start to thinking move the village here master Ikki"

Silvie is looking at me with joyful expression. Her wish is to live here, and her father just say he wanted to move here too.

"Hahaha..don't too hasty like that chief. This area need a lot of terraforming before it can make into a new village. How about prepared the area first before moved here"

"Ah? Right. Master Ikki is right. We should plan this thoroughly and consider many aspects before make the decision. We have this garam field first as priority"

"Actually after clearing the area and make the pool, the labor for the next process is not much chief. They can be used to open more area for settlement"

"Really? That would be great. Master Ikki, how if we take a look at the place while we depart from here?"

"That's better chief. Let's go"

We ride our horse to the place where chief Harvard find the coal. Along the way, chief Harvard pointing the place that he mean to be salt field. The place indeed suitable for salt field, only dozen meters from the shore, but we must clean the land first from the trees.

We ride again about quarter an hour before reach the hill terrain. On a certain place chief Harvard pointing a piles of black stones where he found the coal.

"Master Ikki, there's where I found the stone"

"Yes, chief. I can see it. There's piles of that coal there. Did you check the area surround here?"

"Not much master Ikki, besides our time limited. I only search for piles of stone that similar with that"

"Okay chief. How if we're take a trip round the hill. Maybe we can find something else"

"No problem"

So we make a circle around the hill. During our circling my eyes attracted on a steep slope which full with vines and shrubs that make me stop my horse.

"Chieft wait a minute, let's stop for a while. I see something there"

I'm pointing a place which have vines and shrubs a bit thinner. We both hold our horse rein and step down to check the place that caught my intention.

"Chief, can your clear that place from vines and shrubs?"

"No problem master Ikki"

Chief Harvard unsheathed his sword and starts to hack the vines and shrub in the place I mention. When the vines and shrub were cleared, a big hole appeared in front of us.

"This....this is a cave?" Chief Harvard look amazed with what appear in front of him

"No, chief, look carefully. The entrance is made symmetrical, this is not a cave but a mine, an abandoned mine to be correctly"

"A mine? What mined in here?"

"I don't know chief, but my best guess is coal mine. The coal pile we saw before maybe the remains from this mine from long time ago"

"Hahaha! We surely lucky today master Ikki, we don't have to dig to build tunnel, God already provided for us here"

Chief Harvard laugh with excited expression. Well, he deserved to be happy.

"Ah yes, but unfortunately, we don't have time to explore it today chief"

"Right, but doesn't matter, we will return and check this mine again with more people with us"

"Um. That's good idea. Shall we continue our way back to village chief?"

'Yes, yes. Let's go before the day become dark"

We ride our horse again and leave the hill and back to the village. We take another route to return to the village and when we passing a valley, something caught my attention again.

"Chief hold on a minute, can we take detour and enter this valley"

"Sure, but don't waste much time here master Ikki, the sun already shift on west horizon"

"Not take long time, chief, just pass and checking something that interest me"

"Okay, let's go!"

We enter the valley and I check the white things that I saw from above before passing the valley. And when I saw what that white thing is, it actually cotton plants!

"Master Ikki, what fruit is this?"

I don't have chance to answer when chief Harvard already pick one and bite it

"Pah! Pah! Pah! What the hell is this?"

I have difficulties to hold my laughter and so did Silvie. She smile wide showing her white teeth to me.

"Silvie! Are you laughing at me?" chief Harvard stare her daughter with sharp glance.

"No father! I'm not" she hides her face by buried it in my chest.

"Chief, that's not to eat but to make cloth, and called cotton"

"Eh, cloth? From this? Really?"

"Do you have someone that can make cloth in village, chief?"

"Yes, there's one in the village. But he doesn't have many fibers to make a cloth-like a hemp. So every day he just farming in a field like the others"

"Great, let's bring some and show to him. Maybe he can make cloth from this"

"Good idea!"

Chief Harvard take some cotton and put it in his bag. After that, we leave the valley, back to village. I scrutinize the vegetation in this valley and see some plant that also have value to improve living like rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa), kapok, and several other vegetation that grow in this valley.

We continue our trip and arrive at the village at dusk. After dropping me and Silvie at his house, chief Harvard go to stable to returning the horse. I'm very satisfied with today bounty and feel there will be many things I can do in the future.
