I got ready and made my way to the dining room... It was a bit strange though. The clothes they had laid out for me were an exact fit. like they were tailored to fit me. I walked down the gigantic hallways for about five minutes lost. Before finding the dining room. As I reached the doors they were opened from the inside by two guards. The room was quiet with four people sat at a large table.
At the head of the table was the king and to his left was his daughter, To his right was the man who had attacked me earlier and next to him was the silver-haired knight. Mia was it?
I was ushered to the left of the table to the seat beside the princess and sat. The room remained silent. It made me feel extremely nervous, so I glanced around the room to try to avoid eye contact if possible. It felt as if everyone was staring at me. Before.
"So Yuki was it?" The big guy in a new silver-plated armour addressed me.
"Yep. That's me...."
"You know. You're a lot stronger than you look."
Now this is making me feel extremely uncomfortable. Not only is everyone looking at me but the guy I dropped in a single punch is now complementing me. Is this normal???
"Erm..... Thanks?"
A thunderous roar of laughter came from the head of the table.
"So what do you say general? Do you think he can protect my daughter?"
"Yes Sir. There is no doubt about it..."
"You see Yuki. General Wilhelm here was Aria's guard. But now we need him on the battlefield so you will be taking his job."
"Oh.. I didn't know."
"Yeah... I'm sorry about earlier kid. I was testing you to see if you were competent enough to protect Princess Aria."
"I... See." What kind of person charges someone right after meeting them though?
"So how exactly am I so posed to be a guard?" I just fight off possible attackers right?
"Well first of all. You are expected to be by Aria's side at all times apart from at night. Unless you are in an unfamiliar place of course. If you suspect any danger, it will be your job to get her out of harms way putting her before you own life. But with what I have seen so far..... I doubt anything could put your life in danger."
"Oh well we're on the topic. When will I be paid?"
Everyone in the room was now giving me a look of hate. Apart from the king who simple chuckled as he took a drink.
"You will be paid on the first of each month the amount we discussed earlier."
"Ok. Great."
I finished my dinner and it had become late. I headed back to my room, hung up my cloths and got in bed.
I slept for a while before I was woke by the sound of the door creaking open. Someone was in here with me.
I lay still until I felt them beside me. I jumped off the bed pining them to the floor by their wrists above their head. Whoever it was now couldn't move even if they wanted to.
"I could hear heavy breathing from bellow me. It took a few seconds for my eyes to adjust to the darkness.
The light from the moon illuminated the room. I saw a pair of green emerald green eyes looking up at me.Wait..... Why was the princess trying to sneak into my room. To kill me? I took a moment to examine her with my eyes. She didn't seem armed.
"I'm sorry."
"You are?"
"Yes. I didn't mean to scare you. I just..."
"Aria is it?"
"Yes.."
"Well what were you planning on doing?"
"I was trying to wake you up."
"Well I'm awake now.... So what do you want?
"Well I want to sneak out of the palace."
"Surely if your going to sneak out of the palace you wouldn't tell anyone."
"Well if my farther found out I went out without you. He might fire you."
"Ok.....?? So what now?"
"Will you come with me?"
"I would prefer to sleep...."
"Please????" She looked at me like she was about to cry.
I know it's pretty sad but i couldn't resist that look. It was too damn cute.
"Fine! Just wait a minute." I got off her and put on my clothes.
"Ok so where exactly did you want to go?"
She walked to the window and pointed to an area outside the city walls with smoke rising from it.
"What is it?"
"It's a festival. They have it once a year and i have always wanted to go. But farther nether let me leave the palace."
"Ok i don't see a problem with going.."
"W-What? Really?"
"Yes."
We made our way out of the palace by sneaking past the guard at the exit. The whole grounds was filled with guards walking around. I guess it is to be expected but it seemed a bit excessive to me. We had to crawl through a hedge to get out of the courtyard and into the main city. We came out by the noble district so we weren't yet free of the guards. They had a guard outside every house so we had to stick to the shadows not to be noticed.
It seems the nobles are well protected. But what do you expect when they are mostly politicians or rich merchants. There wasn't a single person out due to a curfew. In the noble district if you were out past 11pm you would be stopped and questioned by guards. I guess this was an attempt to prevent assassination attempts. But to be honest. any good assassin wouldn't openly walk in the street. They would just be begging to be arrested at that point.
Still it would most likely be bad for me to be sneaking around late at night with the princess. Well the king didn't say I couldn't but what would it look like to the other guards. The new kid arrives beats up their boss and then breaks a bunch of rules in just the first day. I might even get my wage lowered. Wait that reminds me.
"Hey Aria. How does currency work here?"
"Are you serious?"
"Yes. It is my first time in a city before."
"Oh well. The currency goes in order from Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Bronze is the least and you could buy a loaf of bread for about 2 bronze coins. 100 bronze coins is equivalent to 1 silver coin. Most working class citizens earn around 80 silver coins a year. And 100 silver coins is equivalent to 1 gold coin. The people who have gold coins tend to be merchants or Nobles. Those houses in the noble district sell for about 80 gold coins. and above gold coins are platinum coins. They are worth 100 gold coins but you wont really see too many as the only person i have ever seen with platinum coins is farther.... I have a question for you if you don't mind."
"No go ahead."
"How much is my farther paying you?"
"60 each month."
"What 60 gold? That's way too much to be paying you."
"Errmm. No. 60 platinum."
"WHAT!!!?" Her jaw nearly hit the floor "6-60 Platinum???"
"I'm guessing that's a lot?"
"Didn't you listen? Even most nobles wouldn't earn that much in a lifetime and your getting 60 platinum a month!!!"
I guess the king really values his daughter a lot. I mean I did make the price a little higher but i thought he was trying to low ball me. If I knew he was offering me so much money I would of done the job for less. I kind of feel like I'm stealing from him. But it's kind of his fault for offering so much in the first place.
"How long until we get there it feels like we've been walking for hours."
"Look there is the city wall!" She pointed forwards at a wall about 50 meters in height.
I couldn't tell from the carriage from a lack of windows but this city is massive.....
