6 Dying Flame
Our group was assigned with a young female guide about nineteen years old who immediately started giving us a history lesson after giving us a small book filled with information.
"Cold air rushing out of a limestone sinkhole-"
I looked around. I saw my friend and joined them.
"So began the discovery of-"
A group of students started being loud which caused Coach to yell at them.
"-They could scarcely believe what they saw. The party had discovered a large series of caverns, an eerie world of stalactites and stalagmites seen by the light of a candle which is how we discovered these caverns."
(Evil Ark) This sounds like someone copied and pasted it off of a website.
I hope that this book doesn't get copyrighted.
We were handed a water bottle before finally entering the caverns. The sight that meeted my eye was absolutely gorgeous. Magnificent natural structures were shimmering from the light.
There was nothing more beautiful than the caverns. It's scarves, shawls, lambrequins of translucent calcite, some white as snow, falling in beautiful folds, fringed with a hundreds patterns. The caverns were glimmering with crystal clear pools and magnificent columns.
After viewing the caverns, it was time to have lunch. We went back to the busses and grabbed our lunches, or at least my friends did, and proceeded to eat. I joked around with my friends, succeeding in making James snort his milk. He gave me half of his sandwich for it. I devoured the sandwich like there was no tomorrow. Feeling satisfied we played around at the table.
"Hey guys, clean up. We're going to continue our tour in 4 minutes."
After coach yelled we rushed to clean. Every other class other than mine left to tour once again. Right when we were about to leave, a man staggered towards us and collapsed.
Some girls screamed, and the teachers and guide came immediately.
(EA) Someone had too much drugs.
Oi. Cut it out. This is serious.
Coach furrowed his brows.
"Go get some help."
"Y-yes sir!" Replied the guide with a shaky voice and she ran off.
"Sir, are you ok?"
Coach and my math teacher crowded him.
"You.." the man muttered.
"Excuse me?"
"WHERE IS IT!" The man screamed crazily.
The man pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed my math teacher in the chest. She screamed out in pain and fell to the floor spasming. Everyone froze, no one dared to move, fearing they would be next.
With a final twitch the teacher stopped moving and lay there surrounded by a pool of blood looking like a broken doll. The man pulled the knife out of her chest and asked in an insane manner.
"Where is it?"
It was a single scream. A girl who couldn't take it anymore ran. The coach immediately followed her and then we all ran with him. The man seeing us run, immediately broke into a sprint and chased us. The girl in the front fell and couldn't get back up. The coach picked her up and ran with her in his arms. The group followed coach into the caverns. We ran until we had to stop.
Coach put the girl down and checked the surroundings to see if the murderer was near. After checking, coach came back and checked the girl's foot. Gently checking it, it seemed that the girl lightly twisted her ankle.
"It's only slightly sprained. It should heal with a good rest. Do you understand?" the girl nodded her head in response.
While everyone took this chance to groan, cry, and whimper, I sat and gasped for air. After we rested plenty coach stood up while carrying the girl and made us get up and moving.
"Kidos move it, don't know if that crazy psychopath will come back."
As we moved I fell behind brooding over what just happened. Why'd this had to happen on my luckiest day. I mean sure I hated my math teacher but I'd never wish for anyone to die like that.
It was sick. She had a family, children to take care. During class she would show us pictures of her children, one in second grade, the other was three years old. Every time she mentioned them, she started to smile, joy and pride bursting from her eyes. And she lost it all because of a murderer. What about her child who was learning at school waiting for his mother? What about the child in daycare too young to remember memories with their mother? What about the husband who has to deal with the death of his love?
I trembled as I clenched my fist, while feeling my nails dig into my skin. An image of a young girl in white appeared in my mind, causing anger to rage inside of my mind.
When I snapped out of it, I realized that I was behind everyone else. I was about to start running when I heard splashes behind me. I froze and whipped my head back with a cold look in my eye.
(EA) We promised to never do this again.
I could feel his pleading through the words. However, I ignored it. Convincing myself, I proceeded to break a promise I swore to keep for an eternity. All to ease the smoldering pain blooming within my chest.
'"Hey, What happens to people when they die?" She said with a strange look.'
I soon caught up with the group. They had set up a camp on the floor. James noticed me immediately and asked, "Where were you?"
"I fell behind thinking about stuff."
"Really?"
"Yeah"
"So did you take care of your business? Took a tinkle?" James teased. I sighed.
"Whatever."
Coach spoke up.
"Hey everyone, we'll be spending the night here. I advise you guys to get rest. For everyone who still has a brochure please bring it here. Boys go make a group in the left and girls in the right. Share your water."
Everyone made a pile of brochures and coach brought out a lighter and burned the pile with some pencils to create a small fire. We then huddled together to keep warm and everyone with a phone tried to call their parents.
"No service!"
"Mommy!"
"Wait I got a sign-"the person you are calling has either turned off his or her phone or is out of range. Please call again"- GODDAMMIT!"
"CURSE THIS DATAPROOF CAVE!"
We huddled around the fire and coach spoke with a tired voice.
"Everyone, today we rest and tomorrow we get out of these caves."
Everyone nodded in agreement and dozed off. I, who was never a quick sleeper was one of the last to sleep. Having lots of time, I thought about today's events.
Hey, are you asleep?
(EA) No. Why?
I mumbled.
"I- I don't know. I'm just angry and frustrated."
(EA) You should sleep while you still can. Avoid other thoughts.
But the more I avoided thinking about it, the more it surfaced. The sensation of dying flame. One that traps you in smoked filled room, slowly clawing its way into your lungs. It doesn't matter whether the flame is dying or not. It's residue smoke will be scorched into your breath. For an eternity.
