Yan Sha also realized as Yang Shu began to speak on the politics of the four kingdoms it also served to shut her up so she couldn't ask questions. Another girl joined them and began to do her hair in a severe complicated braid style so all of her hair was concentrated on the crown of her head. It hurt, but it did feel good once it was done. The food was a spicy concoction that burned her mouth.
As she finished eating Yang Shu handed her a fishing hook.
"Mentor?" Yan Sha asked as she was led to a room with a giant pit. The room was lit with a lot of windows so Yan Sha did not feel apprehensive. But the pit was so deep that she could not see the bottom.
"Yan Sha your first task is to tell me what is at the bottom of the pit. If you'll excuse the blindfold. For this exercise you are not allowed to move. But you may use your other senses. " The light around her dimmed as the blindfold was applied. As her eyesight was dimmed, her other senses became on red alert. She could hear a constant dripping ahead of her and something that felt like a reed was put into her hands. Yan Sha strained her ears and she could just hear two pairs of feets leaving the room, she heard a loud click as the door was closed behind her. The sound echoed in the room and she felt like she was entombed.
For a moment she felt claustrophobic as she wanted to touch the wall where she knew the door was. But she knew if she left the chair where she was seated, she would not be able to easily return as the pit was an open hole in the ground. Yan Sha shivered as she considered if she fell into the hole, it was be no going back.
The only clue was the reed in her hand. She felt along the length and felt a metal bit. She touched it curiously and felt a little handle that she could turn forwards and backwards. When she did this she realized there was something heavy that was dangling off the edge of the thing. She put the rod down and reached up until she felt the string that was attached to the stick.
Yan Sha realized that she was holding a fishing pole. She realized it was attached to something that was in the pit, as she jerked the string that was attached to the object hanging in the pit. She wound the fishing pole so the object would begin to ascend up.
As she wound the object up it banged against the side of the stone pit and produced a slick sound. She couldn't surmise exactly what it was, but it sounded like it was an organic substance. If she let it stick against the side of the pit, it didn't move so she didn't think it was alive. It wasn't too heavy so she couldn't say it was something like a crocodile which were normally housed in pits. And she doubted it was something with teeth as she would have heard it make a hiss or some kind of grunt. It was a quiet thing which was wet. She reeled it up until it flicked water in her face.
Yan Sha wanted to remove the blindfold and see what it was, but she knew there would be some consequences if she did so. She turned the rod in her hands until the heavy object began to rotate. She felt it begin to drip and saturate her clothes. She pushed her knees together to hold the rod while she touched the mysterious object.
She put her hands on either side of it. There were rubber like things which protuded out and a lot of fur which was around the rubber things. She touched and surmised that the fur was short, it did not grow long in places. As she felt around the back she thought it must be a ball of fur. There was a matted mass of what she assumed was moss and slime that was caked to the back of the head. She knew it would be impossible to just touch so she opened her mouth and tasted it.
She froze.
She felt around to the front of the object and felt depressions and a protrusion point which made her feel cold. She felt down and felt bony prominences which made her want to gag.
It was a severed head.
