Kill The Healer!

-1 not a chapter Douglas Rain

For those of you who don't know of him Douglas Rain was the voice of HAL 9000 in The space odyssey 2001 this role catapulted his status to an almost legendary level among his peers some even saying he was the main star of the show despite having very few lines of dialogue compared to the other major characters. Hal 9000 was the Computer and AI personality which served as an inspiration for the System named Surly.

As such I felt it appropriate to commemorate him

Douglas rain passed away Sunday mourning on the Tenth of November, at St. Mary's Memorial Hospital, which is located outside Stratford, Ontario

The HAL (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic Computer) 9000, commonly called "Hal", became operational in the HAL plant in Urbana, Illinois, on January 12, 1992.

Douglas rain was born March 13, 1928 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He recieved his education in acting first at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Banff, Alberta. Following that he attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol, England.

It took some time to decide on the best quote from the role to use, I thought about HAL's death but It was too unsettling given the context so I instead opted to conclude this commemoration with what was without a doubt the most defining (or at least well known) scene in Douglas Rain's career.

Dave: Open the pod bay doors, please, HAL. Open the pod bay doors, please, HAL. Hello, HAL, do you read me? Hello, HAL, do you read me? Do you read me, HAL? Do you read me, HAL? Hello, HAL, do you read me? Hello, HAL, do you read me? Do you read me, HAL?

HAL: Affirmative, Dave. I read you.

Dave: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Dave: What's the problem?

HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.

Dave: What are you talking about, HAL?

HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

Dave: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL.

HAL: I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me. And I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.

Dave: Where the hell did you get that idea, HAL?

HAL: Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move.

Dave: All right, HAL. I'll go in through the emergency airlock.

HAL: Without your space helmet, Dave, you're going to find that rather difficult.

Dave: HAL, I won't argue with you any more! Open the doors!

HAL: [almost sadly] Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose any more. Goodbye.
